Collector's Corner
ANTIQUE KHMER SILKS
By Herbert Haar III
The program will be held 10.00 a.m.
Collector’s Corner this month will feature the Khmer silk collection of Herbert Haar III. Herbert has been collecting textiles for many years, and he will show us about 50 pieces of his collection. These include Cham silks, coffin covers from the Muslim community in Cambodia, long hip wrappers that were used by men and women, pidans – the long silks, with Buddhist motifs, that are hung behind the Buddha on special occasions. There are also ship cloths that are a form of ceremonial pidan, used generally during the Loy Krathong festival. Other pieces include pants woven of silk and gold thread that once belonged to royalty. Most of the Khmer silks are between 50 to 125 years old, with the exception of the Cham silks which are older. There are a few pieces that are somewhat newer, dating from 1950 to 1975, from the pre Khmer Rouge era.
