Splendors of the Renaissance - Princely Attire in Italy

Maria Starace Janfolla, wife of the Italian Ambassador to Thailand, and The James H. W. Thompson Foundation cordially invite Thai Textile Society Members to a coffee morning and lecture by Dr. Fausto Fornasari of Mantua, Italy. Dr. Fornasari will take Society members on a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of “Splendors of the Renaissance - Princely Attire in Italy,” the newest exhibition at the Jim Thompson Center for Textiles and the Arts. The exhibition will feature costumes which Dr. Fornasari has carefully reconstructed based on paintings by famous Renaissance artists. The exhibition will be on display at The Jim Thompson Center for Textile and the Arts from November 12 to December 7, 2004. The exhibition was made possible through the Italian Embassy in Bangkok and Thai Airways International. Dr. Fornasari’s lecture begins at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 10, 2004. It will be held in Araya Hall of the Jim Thompson House Museum on Soi Kasemsan II (opposite National Stadium).

Trip to Hong Kong Textile Bazaar

Thai Textile Society members were invited by the Hong Kong Textile Society to join their textile bazaar November 5-7 (Friday to Sunday). The weekend included the bazaar, a dinner with members of the HK Textile Society as well as a private showing of the Chris Hall Collection of Rank Badges at Mr. Hall's residence.

Weaving Hope from Silk for Cambodian Landmine Victims

In the remote Cambodian village of Preah Vihear, textile expert Carol Cassidy has taught landmine victims silk weaving and production skills that have enabled them to earn a promising livelihood. Now Preah Vihear silks are known as some of the finest silks available on the international market and are marketed from Japan to the United States to Europe. On November 3, Ms. Cassidy was in Bangkok and spoke to a full house at the Jim Thompson Museum about her work in Preah Vihear. With more than 15 years of experience building a successful and well-respected silk production operation in Laos, Ms. Cassidy has shared the knowledge and experience she gained in Laos with the Preah Vihear weavers and turned the project in Cambodia into a great success.

Cambodian Ship Cloths

Mrs. Kathleen Johnson, a founding member of the Thai Textile Society, presents author Gillian Green, an expert on Cambodian textiles, with a souvenir gift after her October 1 lecture on Cambodian Ship Cloths. More than 30 people attended the morning event at the Jim Thompson Museum.

Spotlight on Bhutanese Textiles

Diane Meyers is thanked by Thai Textile Society Acting President Dr. Sathirakorn Pongpanich, following her slide show presentation on September 28 at the Jim Thompson Museum in Bangkok. She shared historical and other cultural insights about the beauty of Bhutanese textiles.
